Begin Your Journey to Becoming a Scribe

The Scribal Process

  • Receive your assignment. Links are available on the corresponding kingdom pages.
    • Contact the Signet or the appropriate kingdom Facebook group. Introduce yourself and explain how you would like to help, whether with calligraphy, illumination, line art, or general support. Every contribution is welcome.
    • Use these groups to share resources, ask questions, and exchange ideas. Their file sections contain useful materials, and assignments are often posted there when scribes are needed.
  • Ask questions early.
    • Clarify the assignment and expectations before you begin the artwork.
    • Read your kingdom’s Scribal Handbook, contact the kingdom Signet or scribal group lead, and review the kingdom scribal website.
    • Each kingdoms page (listed under Kingdom’s tab) on my website includes links, email contacts and scribal practices.
    • Some Crowns maintain both reign specific scribal groups for current designs and broader kingdom scribal groups. Crown preferences are usually posted at the start of each reign, regardless of how assignments are assigned.
    • If you have questions, contact the kingdom scribe, Signet, or kingdom herald; they are the best resources for local scribal practices.
  • If you use standard text from the Crown or handbook, ask the Signet to proofread it after you add names, dates, and other details.
    • Prepare the text in Word and email it to the Signet for review. A second set of eyes is always helpful.
    • Use low-tack tape to attach a clear, large-font gloss or text copy to the back of each scroll so heralds can read it at court.
  • Sign the back of the scroll and photograph it.
    • Keep a personal portfolio. Photograph the scroll flat in good light and take pride in your finished work.
    • I include my Facebook contact information so the recipient can reach me if desired.
  • Package and mail the scroll securely.
    • Military addresses may cost less to ship overseas. Mark customs forms as a gift so the recipient is not charged customs fees.
    • I use Priority Mailboxes because tracking and insurance are included in the shipping cost.
    • I wrap scrolls in butcher paper, mat them, and use glassine paper to protect the gilding before putting them in the box.
