Where I Buy Materials

Basic Scribal Kit: Choose supplies based on your preferences, budget, and what is available. Ask questions and, when possible, test materials before purchasing them.

Gouache: A water-based paint available in cakes, tubes, and premixed colors. Colors can vary by brand, so use the pigment number on the label when matching hues. Gouache comes in student and artist grades; student-grade paint is usually less expensive and contains less pigment. You can also make paint from ground pigments purchased from art suppliers.

Paper, Pergamenata, and Parchment: Select smooth, high-quality surfaces for calligraphy and illumination. Pergamenata and parchment often require preparation before they hold ink and paint; preparation kits are available from retailers that sell these materials.

Ink: Use black and colored inks that are archival, waterproof, and suitable for your chosen surface.

Pens and Brushes: Try dip pens with nibs and holders, markers, or cartridge pens; each creates a different feel and effect. Use natural or synthetic brushes in various shapes and sizes for illumination.

Pencil and Eraser: Sketch layouts lightly in pencil and use a non-pigmented eraser that will not leave residue on the paper.

Light Box: Helpful for tracing designs and holding work in place with low-tack tape. It is especially useful for traveling scribes; I carry several in a backpack for use away from home.
